Feast Day
Patron of Brazil

The month of October is traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary; it is also the month during which we mark another festivity dedicated to Mary Mother of God: Our Lady of Aparecida, Patroness of Brazil, whose feast day is celebrated on October 12th.

Origin

Early on the morning of October 12, 1717, three Brazilian fishermen set out on the waters of the Paraiba River, which ran through their village. They were charged with providing the fish for the banquet that would be held a few days later in the village of Guarantinguetá on the occasion of the visit of the Count of Assumar, Don Pedro de Almeida, Governor of the Province of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, as he travelled to the town of Vila Rica.

The three fishermen – Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso, and João Alves – had had no luck that morning; they had been fishing for hours without catching anything. They had almost given up, when João Alves decided to give it one more try. He cast his net into the river and slowly began to draw it in. There was something there, but it wasn’t a fish… it seemed to be a piece of wood. When they pulled it out of the net, they saw that it was a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the head missing.

João cast his net into the waters once more, and pulling it in, he found another piece of wood which proved to be the statue’s head. As if in response to strange instinct, he cast his net a third time into the river. When he tried to pull it in, he found it was full of fish. Now his companions cast their nets as well, and likewise found themselves overwhelmed with an abundance of fish. [1]

Sanctuary

Over the course of the next few days, the three fishermen cleaned and re-assembled the statue, and Filipe Pedroso placed it in his humble abode. Soon after, news of the miraculous catch spread to the neighbouring villages, and day-by-day more of their countrymen came to honour the Blessed Virgin and pray the Rosary. They gave her the name “Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida,” that is, Our Lady of the Appeared Conception. As time went on, the crowds became so large that there was no longer room in the little hut. A small chapel was built, and later, in 1737, a larger one. Soon witnesses began to tell of many graces that were received from Our Lady, and of the many miracles that took place at the sanctuary.

In 1846 work began on a new church, which was completed in 1888. In 1904, the statue of Our Lady of Aparecida was crowned by order of Pope St Pius X. In 1930, Pope Pius XI declared Our Lady of Aparecida to be the Patroness of Brazil.

Pope St John Paul II became the first Pope to visit the Sanctuary of Aparecida, during his Apostolic Visit to Brazil in 1980. During his visit, he said, “What were the ancient pilgrims seeking? What are the pilgrims of today seeking? Precisely what they were seeking on the day, more or less distant, of Baptism: faith and the means of nourishing it. They seek the Sacraments of the Church, particularly Reconciliation with God and Eucharistic nourishment. And they set off again strengthened, and grateful to Our Lady the Mother of God and ours.” [1]

Miracles and Testimonies

  • The Miraculous Catch of Fish - refers to the foundational miracle in Brazil on October 12, 1717, when three fishermen, struggling to find fish for a governor's feast, found a headless statue of the Virgin Mary in the Paraíba River; after finding the head, their nets overflowed with fish.
  • Miracle of the Candles - One Saturday evening, as the whole neighbourhood was praying and singing in the oratory, the two candles flanking the image suddenly went out, without any wind blowing. And before anyone present could take action, the candles were relit! On yet another occasion, the flames were unusually tremulous for no plausible reason.

Devotion

12 October, marks a special holiday in Brazil, as the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Aparecida, the nation's patron saint. To mark the occasion, Pope Francis took a break from the ongoing Synod General Assembly to pray for the people of Brazil. “On the feast of Our Lady of Aparecida, I carry her in my heart. I fondly recall this city and the Virgin," Pope Francis said.

Pope Francis went on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Aparecida in July 2013 during World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro. After praying at the feet of the Madonna, he said “I had the joy and the grace of entrusting my pontificate to her." [2]

Legacy

In the brief message, recorded by Brazilian Cardinal elect Jaime Spengler of Porto Alegre on the sidelines of the ongoing 16th assembly of of the Synod on Synodality, the Pope encouraged the faithful “to go forward” with the Virgin’s message which, he said, “is all about harmony: harmony among all Christians, harmony with all of humanity, and harmony with the climate.” “We must take care of each other and take care of the climate,” he added.

Concluding the message, Pope Francis asked for Our Lady of Aparecida to bless them. "May she help you move forward and make you very joyful, for she is the Virgin of joy,” he said [3]

Prayer

Prayer to Our Lady of Aparecida:

"O incomparable Our Lady of Aparecida, Mother of my God, Queen of Angels, Advocate of sinners, Refuge and Consolation of the afflicted and troubled. O Most Holy Virgin, full of power and kindness, cast a favorable gaze upon us, so that we may be helped in all our needs. Remember, most clement Mother Aparecida, that it is not known that of all those who have turned to you, invoked your most holy name and begged for your singular protection, any one was abandoned by you. Encouraged by this confidence, I turn to you: I take you from this day forward forever as my Mother, my protector, my consolation and guide, my hope and my light at the hour of death. So, Lady, free me from everything that could offend you and your Son, my Redeemer and Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed Virgin, preserve this unworthy servant of yours, this house and its inhabitants, from pestilence, famine, war, lightning, storms and other dangers and evils that may plague us. Sovereign Lady, deign to direct us in all spiritual and temporal affairs; deliver us from the temptation of the devil, so that, walking the path of virtue, through the merits of your purest Virginity and the most precious Blood of your Son, we may see you, love and enjoy eternal glory, for all ages of ages. Amen."
